Description
Carved Wooden Totem Pole, at Cabot Lodge, Desert Hot Springs, dedicated to the early indian settlers to this area. Once a forlorn, decaying attraction on the fringe of the Coachella Valley's spa corridor, Cabot's has remade itself into a fascinating place to visit. Early Desert Hot Springs pioneer Cabot Yerxa conceived this eccentric variation on a traditional native pueblo and built it single-handedly over the course of decades, using only found materials. The exterior spaces can be visited free of charge, but it's worth springing $13 ($11 for seniors) to take an hour-long tour of the equally fanciful and rugged interior, where extremely knowledgeable docents provide a real education both on Yerxa and the valley's history. Try to time your visit to coincide with one of the site's regular gatherings of Native American and Mexican artists, including Hopi kachina carvers and the famed Quezada ceramicists of Mata Ortiz, which take place throughout the more temperate spring months.
